Seed & Mow · First-mow observations
Before the first mow
A take-outside observation sheet for seeded cool-season lawns. Completing it does not certify that mowing is safe. Choose local guidance for your grass and planting method.
Date / lawn zone:

New seedlings: height range / units:
Established grass: height / units:
Target cut height / units:
Surface and weather observations:
- I measured new seedlings separately from old grass.
- I checked more than one area and recorded slower growth.
- I chose the cutting height using guidance for this lawn.
- The cut removes no more than one-third from the growth being cut.
- Leaves are reasonably dry and the ground can support the equipment.
- I understand the mower setting and maintenance instructions.
- I considered fragile patches, turning space, and the access route.
- I will stop if the first pass pulls seedlings or ruts the surface.
Amount removed = starting height − cut height. Fraction removed = amount removed ÷ starting height. Example: 4 inches to 3 inches removes 25%. This arithmetic does not select your mowing height.

After mowing or postponing: what changed, and what will I check next?
